We chose to use the largest RV heat pump that was available, which was a 15,000btu unit. Since we were building this bookmobile during the summer months, we were able to feel for ourselves just how effective the air conditioning was during the hottest days. Having the windows blocked out was helpful in this respect.

The installation of a roof-mounted air conditioner (or heat pump) is usually a simple affair, but of course, not in this case. The bus had only 6ft. of headroom (down the middle aisle), and we didn't want obstructions of any kind hanging down to cause head banging. So to install the heat pump without losing headroom, we constructed an aluminum riser, or platform , that would raise the unit about 4 inches off the roof. This would allow us to sink the interior bezel up into the ceiling , as shown in the last photo.
