Using electrical accessories in a vehicle without the engine running could be a problem ... a dead battery can't start the engine. If you need to use power in your vehice with the engine off, you should consider installing an auxiliary battery system, also referred to as a secondary battery system. Once you add an auxiliary battery, you'll be free to use power for camping, television or whatever, and always have a fresh "primary" or main battery with which to start the engine! The maintenence-free auxiliary batteries we install can withstand many cycles of charge-and-discharge without damage. This type of battery is called "deep cycle"... Not all batteries can take this kind of abuse. Below are photos of typical batteries in their custom-made holders just before permanent installation under their respective vehicles.
Power invertors are devices that change the 12-volt power in your vehicle to 110-volts AC, the same power as the outlets on the wall in your home. These power invertors come in many sizes (wattages) and can power-up things like video games and computers, all the way up to power-hungry microwave ovens or large power tools. If your power needs are on this higher end of the scale, the installation of an invertor PLUS an auxilliary battery is the best choice, especially if you won't be running the engine while using power.
