Here's the battery, and the battery-box ready to go. Usually we make the battery boxes out of steel. This was a special application we made out of aluminum.
Another view of the same box. if you look closely, you can see a layer of rubber padding wrapped around the battery for shock protection. The great thing about these gel-cell batteries is that they can be mounted in ANY position, even upside-down!
This view shows the battery mounted under the floor of a Ford van. We generally DO NOT mount batteries INSIDE vehicles because of the gasses that are produced when batteries go through their normal cycle of charging and discharging.
When designing a battery box for the undercarraige of a vehicle, we must customize it to work around many irregularly shaped components. For example, fuel tanks, mufflers and frame members can dictate a custom battery box that can look quite unique when completed. Plus, the finished product MUST be able to carry the heavy battery securely without the risk of coming loose or falling off! This particular box was made for a Chevy Venture mini van.
Here's another battery box during fabrication. As the photo shows, this box is made of some robust sheet metal. Since harsh vibration is quite undesirable, the battery must be clamped in tightly and not allowed to bounce around.
